the impact of artistic expressions written by: akua hinds October 10, 2019
I attended my first Paint Nite event last month at Tandem Media, and although I was super excited to be part of it, I was skeptical about how I would be able to create a beautiful work of art as a beginner. It had been years since I had picked up a paint brush, and that was when I was in elementary school. The only artistic brush that I have been using regularly these days is my eye makeup brush. But my art instructor Shelley showed me and the other people in our Paint Nite class how to plan out our painting before we applied the paint to the canvas. Shelley also showed us how to express ourselves naturally through art. Here are some lessons that I have learned through my Paint Nite experience: Planning Can Be Simple Some works of art look so intricate and detailed. While it can take some artists months to create their masterpieces, it does not need to take a long time to create a beautiful piece of art. It is kind of like playing the piano or singing a song. It is totally possible to play and sing new and familiar tunes in easy arrangements. Learning how to play and sing the song Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star does not need to take years of lessons in order to master. I have helped beginner musicians to play and sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and other sweet songs, and it usually takes around two or three lessons to master that song. It all starts with planning things out and starting at step one, then, moving forward from there. Let Your Emotions Guide Your Vision Through creating my two pieces of art at Paint Nite, I was able to use colours to help me express my emotions. Before attending my first Paint Nite event, I had never truly understood how therapeutic art could be. I had heard about art therapy before, but I was skeptical about whether or not art therapy could help a person to heal. Even though I am a life long fan of visual art, I could not make the connection of how creating art work could help a person who was struggling emotionally. Now, I am a total believer in art therapy because my Paint Nite experience gave me a sense of confidence as well as a sense of peace. Feeling a connection to the colours I was using and the vision I was creating was very powerful; I may not have control over the universe, but I had complete control over my work of art, and that was a very satisfying feeling.
Appreciate Each Unique Effort
The people who I was in the Paint Nite Class with each had their own artistic interpretations of what they wanted to express, and we all cheered each other on. In a world where we are often taught to “fit in” it is always encouraging to be in an environment where individuals are praised for their uniqueness. We were all giving each other compliments and positive feedback on the art that we were creating, and I totally thrive in environments where uniqueness is celebrated. Paint Nite was just what I needed to give me hope for the future. I definitely plan on attending more Paint Nite events because I am fascinated with colour and how we all have the capabilities to create great things if we focus on doing so. It is amazing to me that art is all around us, and we take it for granted that everything and everyone is a work of art. Each day is an opportunity to appreciate how much beauty this world possesses. Also, each day provides chances to contribute to the world’s beauty through our intentions and actions. Akua Hinds works as a marketing business owner, journalist, musician, teacher, and actress.
