Have you ever doubted the saying that it truly is better to give than to receive? I have doubted that belief for a long time, but now that I am one year older (my birthday was earlier this month) I realize with full understanding just what a privilege it is to give of your time, knowledge, and caring to someone. Years ago, I was watching a video on YouTube of a direct sales business coach talking about how excited she was to watch another sales leader “give her job away” to the other women who were members of her team. At the time, I didn’t get it. Why on earth would someone want to give away their position? Even though a top leader training someone else to replace them could open up doors and help that leader rise even higher in the organization, it could also mean turning a team member or customer into a top competitor. But now, I understand that iron sharpens iron.
Do you know what that means when iron sharpens iron? If you don’t know what it means, then I hope that you accept and understand this explanation; iron sharpens iron means that two people sharpen and equip each other through consistently pouring into each other’s lives and through living by example. We live in a world in which we are taught that being on top should be the ultimate goal. There is certainly nothing wrong with being the best that we can be, but there is also nothing wrong with helping someone else to be the best that they can be as well. In fact, it is the right thing to do to help someone else realize their true potential.
When someone trains you to learn a skill, the goal is that you will eventually become proficient enough to be able to use that skill on your own and possibly even be able to train other people to learn the same skill. Just like the well-known proverb about when you give a man a fish, you give him fish for a day, and when you teach a man to catch fish, he will be richer all his life. Showing other people how to do what you do is one of the best ways that you can show someone that you care. All of us learn from other people, and those people who teach us learned from other people and sources. Passing the torch to another person is a great way to leave a strong legacy behind for the future.
Equipping someone else with the skills and the encouragement that they need is a wonderful way to help make the world a better place, and who among us does not want to live in a better world? Now, of course, we are all human, and all humans have selfish sides to our personalities. We want to see ourselves get ahead, and we should want to see ourselves progress. However, we can not move ahead in this life by ourselves. The wealthiest individuals usually become wealthy because they are serving others and what they provide to the public is in high demand. For instance, a retail chain that earns millions of dollars per year is able to earn that revenue because they serve a large number of customers. The more people that you influence in a positive way, the more you benefit. Instead of being envious about another person’s success, take a different approach and make it your mission to learn how to imitate a similar success in your own life.
Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that the people who are where we want to be started as beginners. We all need to start from somewhere, but no matter what we have gone through, we can bloom where we are planted. As you begin your journey to making much needed changes towards where you want to be, always remember the importance of being a servant leader. To me, a servant leader is like Jesus Christ, God’s son, who was sent here on earth by God to set the right examples for us, teach us, give us hope, and show us the way. When you serve and help to elevate others by sharing your knowledge and showing someone else how to be able to duplicate your success you make the world better for yourself and others because a more progressive world means more opportunity for EVERYONE including you.
